Total volume shows completed work
Training volume is useful because it describes how much loaded work was completed. It can rise when sets are added, when repetitions increase or when load increases across the same structure.
Volume does not automatically mean better training. It is a perspective, not a verdict. A high-volume session can be productive, excessive or simply different depending on the programme.
Repetitions describe output
Completed repetitions reveal how much movement was performed, independent of the weight used. This can be helpful when a training phase emphasises practice, technical consistency or higher-rep work.
Reps alone do not describe intensity. Fifty light repetitions and fifty demanding repetitions are not the same experience, which is why AARU separates this view from strength and average load.
Strength and average load answer different questions
Strength progression helps contextualise top performances and how they change over time. Average mechanical load describes the typical load being used across the work.
Strength can rise while total volume stays stable. Volume can rise while maximum strength remains unchanged. Average load can reveal whether training is drifting heavier or lighter even when the session looks familiar.
Read trends across several sessions
One workout is a point. Several workouts begin to create a line. AARU separates these metrics so a lifter can see which part of the training record actually changed.
That separation helps avoid over-interpreting a single session. The best use of analytics is not to produce a dramatic conclusion, but to make the signal easier to notice.
